'I loathe the very sight of you’, I said.

‘That’s alright. You see being friends with you is not the only aim of my life’ he said. He walked away and I strode back to my room.

I bumped into him on the third day of college. I hated him at first sight. It was impossible to tell who detested the other more. He was senior to me and was basically the ‘perfect’ guy of the college. Star student, magnificent speaker, charm oozing; people worshipped the ground he walked on (except one). The hate was mutual; the college stopped on its track every time we crossed paths (we took utmost care not to meet most days).

Everything changed when autumn approached and we were assigned a senior to mentor us for our first semester. I walked into the room assigned for mentoring and was stunned (in a bad way) to see him sitting at the desk assigned to me. Apparently, the professors didn’t know about our legendary animosity towards one another. Needless to say, our dislike for each other made these classes less than agreeable. He would unnecessarily find mistakes in my work and I would snub at him for his high-handedness.

And then one day I fell right into his arms (quite literally). My ankle twisted on the stairs and I toppled right into someone and that someone was him. He offered to help me but I was obstinate and refused. However, to my utter mortification, I found that I could not stand. After several pathetic attempts, I stopped trying and was crouching down to sit on the staircase when two robust arms picked me (to my displeasure) and helped me. That day I saw a version of him that no one had ever seen; in place of the unfathomably hardhearted boy, I saw a tender person.

Before long we both became civil towards each other and the classes became satisfying. We started spending more time together and realized that we were more similar than different. Both extremely independent and passionate individuals, our personalities sparred. We grew to know each other and somewhere the line between hate and love disappeared. It’s been five years of togetherness and being ‘us’. I didn’t mention his name did I? Well I will leave him anonymous for you all to guess what his name could be.
