No one remembered when the meeting started. It was still called the Monday Sync, though months had passed and seasons had changed outside their muted squares.

At first, they stayed out of obligation. Then out of habit. Now, out of fear.

Cameras off. Mics muted. Faces gone. Only the soft hum of open lines and the occasional rustle of someone breathing too close to their mic.

“Can we… end this?” someone asked once, weeks ago.
Silence. Then a voice — calm, authoritative, unrecognisable — said, “Let’s keep it going. Alignment matters.”

Since then, no one spoke. But the call persisted, an invisible pulse across time zones. New hires were added automatically. Old ones were never removed.

At night, when the office was dark, the conference room speaker still glowed green.

“Next slide,” the voice whispered.
