Wish List

She looked up with troubled eyes

Wondering what to ask from Santa this time.

Barbie doll, Kitchenette set, rocking horse,

Or that aquamarine blue satin dress

In her mind vied for equal space

Owned by all her school friends.

She sat down to write that letter to Santa

Before midnight; halfway through, 

Remembered the girl stricken with polio,

Limping on patched up crutches to school

Needed a new pair very soon.

Decided her wish list could wait for next year

Wrote to Santa, pleading new crutches for her!
