The First Flight
The First Flight
I lifted my head from where it was tucked under my wing,
The first chill wind has hit, the winters begin
The force of its gust knocks the leaves out of the tree
As I watch the world momentarily
Swirling in red, orange, and gold
The ground seems sparse, far more than I’ve ever seen before
The flocks have started I need to catch them up
Soaring higher and faster in the sky above.
I feel so nervous, so terrified
This is my first flight towards the southern side.
I need to fly to the south for warmth and food
I will return to my nest once the winter passes by for good
I looked at the sky and the sun
"Tell me where did they begun"
The directions were measured as the sun light show
I flapped my wings and gave a thankful bow
Then with the determination at heart
I flapped the wings and soar to part
Noting all landmarks and my nest here
I will return when the spring is near
I flew higher and higher above,
Across meadows, fields, lakes fountains
Above tall trees and branches
I flapped my wings with force to cross suburb
The chilling wind blew across makes me tired
But I cannot stop, need to find my friends
The setting sun inspired
Up and up above the sky
Across the clouds so high
I need shelter now a hollow-down below
In the tree trunk big enough for me to tuck in
The chill in my spine grew
The muscles felt pain and withdrew
It started drizzling and the shelter was required
I cannot look for food in the deep night!
I crawled inside the hollow quite big enough
To fit me in with my legs crossed
I am happy that I won't have to freeze in the frost.
The first ray of the sun rose red, orange and gold
I went step by step outside and behold....
A gust of chill wet air slapped my face
And I fell with a thump on my face
I rose again tired and frail
I cannot stop now and follow the trail
My friends and relatives left me behind
I have to travel and quicken my find
I pull my strength in my muscles, wings and feather
I need to move however bad is the weather
I search for food on the ground with diverting eyes
I have been flying harder and harder determine to cross whatever lies
Then I see a small rat scrunching in the bush
I swooped down with a woosh!
Landed against the bush, not a difficult catch
When something rushed towards me---a brach!
I stumbled with the sudden attack
I move slowly and slowly back
Then swooped up in the sky through the gushing wind
I tricked the hound, the dirty fiend
Then I engrossed all my strength to fasten my pace
The warmth of the sun said the days were less
I see the green meadows, the lakes and gardens
The greenery as if embraced me to freshen
The beautiful tulips raised their hands towards me
The daffodils waved their tips like waves of sea
The warmth was near,
My muscles gave away
But I had no fear....
Then I saw the tall tree and chirps of different migratory birds
Few flapping the wings and enjoying their flight
I slinked myself in the comfort of the nest
I had finally reached my destination to rest
My eyes felt tired, and I sink on the nest
With my near ones beside me I fall into rest.
The sweet smell of honey, the soothing sunshine
The fresh leaves, flowers and melodious chirping
Filled my ears with sweet wine
Singing the lullaby to make me fall asleep
In the wonderland of dream, I dive into deep.
