Rehearsals

She checked herself in the mirror, one more time
The cream silk sari flattered
Her dusky complexion, her deep set eyes
Bordered with a thick rim of kohl.
Blushing at the reflection,
She pinned a string of jasmine flowers
On her loosely plaited long hair.
Her jhumka earrings twinkled
To the rhythm of red bangles
That chattered on her slender wrists.
As dusk rode into moonlight
The dim light from the lamp flickered
G
entle whistle of the wind
A mild scent of sandalwood and roses
She lay in wait, for her beloved
His promise to ride together
Into the sunset.
She froze,
At the electrifying hug
Brawny hands locked her
From behind
As her sweetheart warrior
Hummed a tune in her ear.
The rehearsals
That once played in her head,
Her script and choreography
Washed away
By the pouring rain
Mingling with red earth.
