HIS PROMISE
HIS PROMISE
I stand, half-hidden, hour after hour, all day, peeping
Through the very narrow slit of the closed window
Afraid of the people walking on the road will see me
Keep the window always shut, but for tiny open slit
If they see me, they will start their usual comments
They will call me a mad lady, who had lost her mind
They repeat every day, why is she waiting in vain for a man
The soldier who is dead in battle, which Army confirmed
Who are these people to judge me, my sanity of mind?
What do they know about the love between us two?
What he had promised to me, before going to battle
How will he ever think breaking his promise to me?
Said he, I will return one day running to you with medals
Or my cold body will come with a flag wrapped in honour
But his body had not come to me but, only his uniform
How will I believe, that he was missing from the border?
Suddenly, door burst open, he rushed in and hugged tight
As I cried, he said, I know dear, for me you will ever wait!
As speechlessly we shared this moment of endless ecstasy
Lost in endless embrace stood we, icy wind roared around us
The next day, I saw the people crowding around the window
Wept, disentangled, body frozen, still hugging the window
An unlucky girl muttered they, stupid of them not to know
I, the luckiest woman, to die in the warm embrace of my love
