For Liberty
For Liberty
Oh Liberty!
That were made the snake-
Too strong for me art thou,
My flesh too weak against.
What new abounds pleasure?
Thou in thrift gave?
But unlike fruits-
In spite unchanged.
Blessed have been I
To have all that there is?
Or cursed; for having thee,
I have all
That I should rather not?
For discretion thou dost grant me
But wisdom
I have none!
What a slight thing
I make of me,
When I do all wrong
Withal for all, I charge thee?
Why no bondage, say liberty?
So forever I may
Escape me?
I sin again and suffer too,
All again myself- an intrigue
To hay which: thou dost have me
And to pay which: thou art- Oh liberty!
