Mysteries/crime series (preferably English)

Foreign language movies, suspenseful movies

Is that it? Yes, they reply. Yours? I begin

Romance movies (any), movies with happy endings

Movies that make me laugh; movies that help me forget

When I’m feeling sad, murder/mysteries, action, and suspense

A moment’s silence, as we each think and compare

We agree on murder/mystery, action, and suspense

Is that a place to start? Just a small matter, why is your preference?

English? The English have not forgotten or mislaid the qualities 

of quiet suspense, and dramatic irony, (irony in its totality). Americans?

Their humour is pre-packaged, obvious and garish, and frankly unfunny.

Without a running commentary on its deficiencies; is that possible?
