To Baba, With Love

My father, was a very jolly, seldom negative and an extremely lovable man. A follower of Buddhism, he was a great believer of Karma and he believed that alone, would take care of everything. He had a booming voice and a hearty laugh, that would resonate till the end of the road; and with his antics, he could bring a smile onto anyone's face. Baba was also a great lover of food and as luck would have it, he was also highly diabetic. Diabetes as they say, is a killer disease, however, Baba never let his "illness" come in the way of food. Despite the several restrictions imposed by doctors, he was still seen at Phuchka stalls and sweet shops: devouring on their delicacies. In fact, I think, Golpark's famous Das Cabin had become so accustomed to him, they started giving him discounts.

Baba and I shared a special bond, something that cannot be expressed in mere words.

Sometimes when I got late while coming back from school, he would venture out on the road to look for me and how angry I would get! I would often tell him "What are you going to do when I go to college? Are you never going to let me be independent?"

I would often get angry and yell at him for not controlling his diet, but he would always listen to everything I said with a smile on his face; once I heard him tell Ma "Meyeta boro hoye gelo" ("our daughter's grown up"), with a hint of pride in his voice.

Baba loved me dearly and would always go out of his way to make me happy.

Baba, Ma, our 3 year old labrador, Bishcoot and I; lead a fairly happy life, until one day, everything changed, it all came so suddenly, like heavy rainfall on a sunny day, that we never really recovered from it.

I remember those twenty-four-hours clearly. It was a rainy day and from the morning, Baba was running a slight temperature. However, by afternoon, matters became worse, and at around three noon he suffered a massive heart attack and passed away. Although moments before his death he was sweating and gasping, my always positive Baba's parting words were, "I'm fine, don't worry." He said this with a smile on his face, and I think I saw that familiar twinkle in his eyes.

It has been two years since he left us and with him, he took away a huge section of our lives, leaving with us only happy memories to cherish forever.

People often say, the "other world" is a much better place and people who go there are unfailingly at peace.

Baba, wherever you are, hope you are happy, and hope you get to eat anything you want without anyone to reprimand you.

We love you forever and always.
