One thing was certain, that the white kitten had had nothing to do with it! It was the black kitten’s fault entirely. Mom Kitty was standing before the mess in the dining room frowning and looking at her kittens with stern in her eyes. Both Blackie and Whitey looked at their angry mother and then at each other’s face. Mom is going to beat them up severely today. She had warned them many a times before they came inside the house. They should have stayed back in their home and then play on their own like other days until Mom Kitty returned for lunch.

That morning Mom Kitty was getting ready to go to her workplace when her two children Blackie and Whitey purred their request to their mom “Mom we are now big enough to venture out of our house. So please take us with you today to your workplace” Mom Kitty was a bit annoyed so she answered “No I won’t. You both still forget how to behave when you are in another’s home. The day before yesterday Mr. BrownCat had complained about your mischief in his master’s garden. I had to say sorry and help him to clear all of the mess done by you”

Blackie said “We are very sorry Mom. Actually, Tobby, Mr. BrownCat’s son invited us to play with him. We were playing hide and seek when their owner Mr. Chestfield came in the garden to watch the gardener working. Tobby is a bit afraid of Mr. Chestfield and he ran out of his hiding place to move away from him. Meanwhile Whitey was coming to find us out and they crashed with each other and that too just near Mr. Chestfield’s feet. In horror they ran in different directions and in rush one tumbled over the gardener’s bucket kept for gathering flowers and other ran into the neatly piled-up heap of dry leaves”

Mom Kitty said “I just don’t want to hear any of your excuses. If that was the case you two should have said sorry and helped Mr. BrownCat but you two ran away from the spot”

“Please, Mom we are very sorry for that. We will never do that again. Please give us a second chance to prove our good behaviour”

“Ok get ready. Lets’ see how you behave throughout the day”

Blackie and Whitey were very happy. They got ready very fast and joined their mother to go to her owner’s house. Blackie asked, “Mom what’s your work in our owner’s home?”

Mom Kitty said “I have a lot of works to do but the main work is to catch the mice that create havoc in the household. And till now I have not disappointed my owner and they are very happy with my work”

They walked from their basket kept in the storeroom and entered the house through dining. The moment they entered a young voice shrilled “Mom look Kitty has brought her kittens today” Blackie and Whitey put their faces up to see a young child smiling at them. Mrs. Nottingham the sweet girl’s mother said “I’ve seen them, dear. They are very cute” The girl bent down and picked Whitey up and started patting her. Whitey purred softly trying to show her love towards her. She said “Mom can I play with them?”

“Yes, Annie dear but don’t hurt them. They are still small”

Annie bent down to pick up Blackie too but he ran after his mother who has advanced towards the kitchen. He was more interested to see how his mother works rather than playing with the child of the house. His mother gave an extensive search of mice there and then went to the kitchen garden behind. Blackie followed her silently, watching her every move.

Suddenly Blackie noticed a fat mouse running towards the kitchen. He started chasing it. The mouse ran fast and entered the room through the hole in the door. He too ran to get it but dashed against the closed door. He got hurt a little but he didn’t have time to take care of it. He has to catch it at any cost. He thought of entering the home through the front door.

The moment he got around to enter the house through the front door he heard a loud barking ‘Bow Wow’ and turned to see a large dog running towards him. Blackie ran at a fast pace to get away from the danger coming behind and ran straight towards the dining room entering through the main door. Whitey was coming towards the dining room behind Annie when she saw a ball of wool lying under the chair near the kitchen. Mrs. Nottingham was knitting a sweater. She jumped to get it and opened the whole of it.

After entering the dining room Blackie once more saw the fat mouse running towards the kitchen. He ran to catch hold of it and at the same moment, the cook entered with the jug of milk for the breakfast. There was a loud crash in the dining and everyone ran in to see the cook on the floor and the whole milk is spilled on the floor. Mrs. Nottingham helped the cook to get up and set all the things right. No one could understand whether the opened bundle of wool created the mess or Blackie! Which do you think it was?
