Rule Breaker

Nandu hated standing in queues. Just like many of us. If it was for movie tickets it was a different matter altogether. However, if it was in a bank, it wasn’t as entertaining. Anyway, Nandu couldn’t avoid visiting the bank every few weeks due to regular tasks.

One such Saturday, he waited for his turn to arrive standing in a queue.

In the queue there were five other people. The adjacent queue was meant for senior citizens. Since the concerned banker wasn’t at seat due to urgent work, an old man stood in the general queue. Seeing him, one of the persons in the general queue asked him to complete his transaction first. None of the other people had an issue except one young adult who objected to it.

“There is a separate queue meant for them. He can’t just use any line. Priorities do not apply in this line. The rule is a rule.” The youngster declared rather rudely.

Nandu immediately stepped in to ask if there was a reason why he was refusing to let the old man go on priority. The young man said nothing except that the priority did not matter in a general queue. The young man stressed the rules.

Nandu responded to the young adult with equal rudeness.

“Young adults are supposed to be rule breakers these days in every walk of life. When it is most needed, why do you step back? Especially when there is no real reason why you should be doing it. Does that make you look cool? You may be right in your argument; nevertheless, your words lack sensitivity. I really hope you are capable of much more.”

Without further ado, Nandu helped the old man finish the transaction at the earliest.

The old man completed his work and soon after that, he sat on the bench before making an exit. He looked visibly tired to even stand for five minutes.

Nandu did not care to see the young man.

On the way back, Nandu pondered how the majority of young people like to live in a rat-race even in the most ordinary circumstances.

"Before it becomes a way of life, they must learn to break certain rules. "

" In life, it wasn't always important to do the right thing but to do the appropriate thing mattered."
