I was working as Network Engineer at Delhi International Airport, Terminal-3 on behalf of Wipro Technologies, in year 2010. We were 4 Engineers in our technical team. All of us were 2007 graduates from different colleges. Their names were Akhilesh, Rajkumar, Sanjay and Harsha. Due to recession, I was not working in Industries from 2008 tom 2009, so Industrial life was new for me. But other friends of mine were quite lucky that even after graduating at the time of recession, they were able to get industrial jobs. So, they were little more aware than me regarding corporate culture. All my collogues were highly supportive and helpful. We used to have our lunch together and in case of any technical difficulty on the site, we always helped each other. Actually, my office friends were just like my family. Withing few months of joining the office, we developed an inseparable bond of love and faith among each other.
Since they were more experienced than me in reference to industrial procedures, they always guided me during tough situations. Sometimes when I used to make severe faults, both my friends used to take its blame on themselves and said to the boss, "Sir, this is first Industrial job of Piyush. Mistakes are oblivious. But you please don't worry sir, we are there to make him familiar with the industrial set-up." My kind boss always liked their gesture of supporting me all the time. As I was new, trainings were regularly going on and a day came when I became perfect in my task.
Diwali time was near, and everybody was expecting holidays, if not more, than at least on the day of Diwali. But Delhi International Airport, Terminal-3 was the most crucial site of my organization because it was high-alert location. Any kind of mismanagement can lead to problems for passengers, whether it is food service providers, parking facilities or IT Organizations providing technical engineers to the airport, every single task was extremely crucial. Since my boss cared for all of us as his own family members, with a heavy heart, he told us one day that the company is not giving any holiday to anyone. Only on the day of Diwali, the newly joined engineers will get holiday and that also for 1 day.
I was very upset, as I wanted to celebrate this day with my family. My family is a joint family, and the best part is all my relatives also live in the same city where I live. So, in any kind of festive season, we celebrate the event together. That is why I was more upset. But never mind, office is always priority. My boss was preparing duty and holiday roster for coming days. Since it was a 24x7 job, we used to work in shifts. My boss called me and said," Piyush, I have come to know that you need Diwali holiday. So, I am offering you holidays for 7 days. Enjoy Diwali, be safe, see you after 7 days." Surprisingly I said, "Thank you very much Sir. But I am sorry to ask, earlier I was denied holidays Sir?"
My boss smiled and said, "See Piyush, the point is if you are not in the office, who will accomplish your set of responsibilities. This is the reason the holidays are denied at crucial sites. Work is always priority. But Akhilesh, Rajkumar, Sanjay and Harsha have assured me that for 7 days, they will handle your responsibility also along with their own sets of responsibilities. And I am satisfied because Akhilesh, Rajkumar & Harsha are the best engineers of my team, of course along with you. So don't worry, just enjoy your Diwali."
I was so happy after hearing the words of my boss. After the office is over, all 4 of us met outside the office premises. We all smiled and hugged each other. I said, "Friends, thank you very much for this. Because of you people I will be there with my family in this festive season." Sanjay said," Ok man, enjoy your holiday but before going, don't you want to celebrate the festival with your friends?". I said, "Of Course man! Come-on let's party". Saying this we all sat in Harsha's car and went for a long drive and later, we had a delicious dinner that night.
Time spent with true friends is actually a life worth lived. When they are around us, it's a source of Inspiration. And when they are not around, it's a memory if lifetime.
