Damsel In Distress

Even though twenty six, Roshni read and believed in fairy tales just like a kid. Her father was an oncologist, saving people's life, just like some empire's king whose primary aim would be to contribute to welfare of his subjects, mother a simple yet kind-hearted housewife, no less than a queen. She even had a Prince Charming. Rohan, two years older than Roshni, works in a well-known multinational corporation.

Roshni never thought of getting a job and well why would she when her life is perfect. For meeting basic needs and luxuries, she is free to depend on either her father or Rohan. So, instead Roshni dedicated all her time to shopping for princess-like clothes and accessories. While most might perceive it as shallowness, I believe its sheer naivety.

One day, Shruti, Roshni's childhood friend asked her and Rohan to go for an all-night concert. While first immensely unwilling because too much crowd tends to suffocate her, she finally surrendered to Shruti and Rohan's constant pestering.

Clad in an excessively expensive and beautiful pink dress, Roshni felt just like Cinderella when she was going to the grand ball. Instead of staying for the whole event, she and Rohan agreed to return by midnight.

While the concert was more or less good, in Shruti's words, mind boggling, Roshni was feeling restless. She wanted to come back and snuggle in her comfy bed. It was already 1am; Rohan sensed Roshni's uneasiness, and went out with her.

It was quite chilly. Roshni tightly wrapped a shawl and waited while Rohan moved on to bring his car from the parking lot. Three guys were continuously watching Roshni and passing sly remarks about her among each other. She got utterly nervous when they slowly approached her.

Roshni, now lying on the ground trying to protect those devils from devouring her, was shouting. A few passers-by watched this horrific scene but none unfortunately came forward to help. Rohan was also immensely scared so much so that he considered hiding behind a wall viable.

On opening her eyes with immense pain next morning in a hospital, Roshni thought that while in fiction "damsels in distress" are rescued, in reality, everyone takes a step back than ahead.

In today's era, can Cinderella come home at midnight without any tension? Can Prince Charming emerge as brave? Can fairy tales ever be true?
