In a small town in Mexico there lived a small girl whose name was Amara. Her mother was a professional chef, so when she was free, she told Amara many facts about food. Amara loved them so much that she wrote them down in her diary. Today she was feeling bored so she decided she would go through them;  


•Maple syrup is made from the sap of maple trees. To make it, you drill a hole in the tree, collect the sap that dribbles out, and boil it until it thickens

•Hamburgers are not made from ham, but from ground beef

•Clam chowder is seafood soup from new England and northeast USA

•Tex-mex is a mixture of flavours from Texas and Mexico

•Gumbo is a spicy soup from Louisiana, made with meat and seafood

•Coffee beans and bananas are Costa Rica's most important crops

•Chocolate was first made in Mexico, from the seeds of the cacao tree

•Sugar cane from Central America and the Caribbean is used to make sugar

•The granadilla ( a kind of passion fruit) is one of the many exotic fruits that grow in tropical parts of South America 

•Irish pubs serve a famous type of beer called Guinness, which is jet black and very frothy

•Snails are a French delicacy. They are cooked in their shells with garlic

•Croissants are made from fluffy pastry. People eat them for breakfast

•Champagne is a fizzy white wine. It is made in an area called Champagne

•France makes 400 kinds of cheese, many of which are eaten all over the world

•Many French farmers grow grapes for making wine

•Swiss people eat more chocolate than anyone else in the world

•Vienna in Austria is famous for its coffee houses, where people eat expensive cakes and drink coffee

•Paella is a traditional Spanish dish made from yellow rice mixed with seafood, pieces of meat, tomatoes and peppers

•Cappuccino is coffee with frothy milk. Italians drink many different kinds of coffee

•Ice cream has been made in Italy for more than 500 years

•The Polish town of Torun is well-known for its gingerbread

•Draniki is made from potato pancakes stuffed.with meat

•Caviar is an expensive delicacy made from the eggs of sturgeon fish

•Borsht is beetroot soup. It is eaten hot or cold

•Greek people make coffee by boiling ground coffee in a tiny pan of water until it foams 

•People in Bulgaria eat lots of yoghurt because they think it helps them live longer

•Watermelons are refreshing fruits that grow on the ground

•Maize is grown for flour, animal food and as fuel

•Olives are grown for their seeds, which are pressed to make olive oil
