A Memorable Holiday

A Memorable Holiday

I remember that day when I was in Class 7. I spent the Summer Vacation playing all day around, near the house. Most of my classmates and friends had gone on trips with their families across the country; some even abroad. That day, I was very disheartened as my family could not go to any outstation that year. My parents did not state this clearly, but I think it was a financial issue. I told my mother, “All my classmates would return and boast about how wonderful the Taj Mahal was, or how beautiful Rajasthan was. You both didn’t take us anywhere out of town for almost two years now”. I cried. My mother consoled me and put me to sleep in her soft arms.

As the school reopened, a grand inter-state essay writing contest was announced in which I happily participated. The theme of the contest was ‘A Memorable Holiday’. At first, I was very nervous as I had no idea what to write, or which trip to describe. But as I started penning down my thoughts, I wrote about my most memorable trip to my native village where my parents had taken me to a relative’s wedding. It was the most scenic place I had seen in my short life at the time. I described the cool morning breeze, the smell of the farms, the greenery, and the village-style vast, spacious homes with massive gardens at the front and back. I described the sunrise at 5 in the morning and the beautiful sunset behind the small mountain range. I describe the cows, the sheep, the borewell, the handpumps, and the tractors. I described the simple routine of the village people, which impressed me a lot, their healthy and tasty food, and their welcoming nature for any outsider.

My essay, as I look at it, was a simple one, but it was close to my heart. It did manage to impress the jury as well and I received the first prize, which was a huge cash amount. I told my parents happily, “Let's save this money, next year I will take you both on a trip”.

It was a proud moment for them and a very joyful and memorable one for me.
