Greed
Greed
God, please change your plan
We're needy-
We're always asking for more,
We're greedy -
We think that there's better in store.
We're lazy-
So we think to beat the odds,
So we pray -
In every which way
To our myriad gods.
In temples' of marble with gold inlay,
In chiselled granite shrines, a bronze array
Of statuettes, even in village squares,
To gods moulded in clay,
Everywhere we fold hands and pray.
We ask for houses, power, wealth,
We pray for children and good health,
For fame, long life, an end to strife.
We bribe, with a promise to pay in full measure,
We bargain with what we think of as treasures.
If we truly believe that God is great
Why are we trying to rearrange our fate
Praying for our circumstances to be rearranged
When we can pray for the strength to evolve, to change?
