A WARM WINTER NIGHT
"Quite a sight to view, on a snowy night."
I whispered to my wife, while sipping my wine.
A man at our door, old and broken.
His eyes, hopeless and frozen.
Covered in snow, head to toe.
Wearing a torn jacket,
Oh! he needed a blanket,
or maybe a room,
his eyes begging for some food.
I was about to shut the door
when my wife stopped me from doing so.
She welcomed him in.
And I was staring at her with a grin.
She wrapped him in a thick blanket, offered him a seat.
Asked him, if he would like to have a bowl of hot soup and meat.
He nodded as his eyes gleamed.
Tears rolled down those eyes, as he finished his meal.
With trembling hands, he looked up and smiled with zeal.
My heart ached for a while.
Asked him to stay for the night.
It was freezing outside.
"No, thank you", he replied.
We insisted but he hesitated.
He stood up to leave and
thanked us for the meal.
My wife's teary-eyed.
"I see my father in your eyes", she replied.
She hurried inside,
packed him some food, forecasting his plight.
He stood at the door for a while.
In exchange, he slipped an envelope into my hand, as he smiled.
"Merry Christmas, kids", and then he waved goodbye.
My heart warmed,
as I opened the envelope
and read his note.
"Thank you for making me realize, home can be strangers too."
Santa had stepped into our home,
leaving us with the greatest gift,
making us realize,
kindness is a boon.
