We are the Crazy Bong Lahiris.... On Rakhi to my bro

This happened when we were really small. I [ Mrs B N Pinky now was Ms Pinky Lahiri then ] was in Class 6, studying in Pine Mount School Shillong. My brother [ Sanjay Lahiri ] was in class 3 in All Saints Diocesan School, Shillong . The two schools were about 15 mins distance by foot. One day my brother by mid afternoon during a break just walked to my school and landed in my class. He was too little to walk and come that distance by himself. We were all astonished, and shocked. Nevertheless, school was in session so my teacher let him sit in our class with me. Ours was a girls school and there was this little boy sitting with me in my class. all the girls were pinching him on the cheeks and he was blushing pink, it was crazy.  

Usually my mom would first collect him after school and then come and collect me. I remember this so vividly as there was my mom searching the whole school for him and frantically running helter-skelter with imaginations of abduction which was rather rampant those days. There were no mobiles those days [1982] so the only communication she could get was from the landline of my next door neighbour.  

With a disheveled look and crying all her way she came to my school to take me from school and there lo and behold we were both standing there. She was happy and angry at the same time. He got a good spanking. But he was saying that he wanted to see me so he came. To this day I wonder how a little boy walked all that distance by himself just to meet me. That innocence of brother sister attachment awes me even today. It was such a big affair that to this day it's crystal clear in my memory. There are some crazy adventurous moments which etch itself to our heart and remain there.

To My Brother Raju [ pet name ] on Rakhi, I call him Bapu, has been my pillar all the way through life's ups and downs. I am 51 now. . . . . .
