The Noble Profession
The Noble Profession
"Come on, children," I felt elated as I looked at those bright, innocent faces in front of me. "Write it down in your notebooks."
As they all started copying the notes from the blackboard, I took some time to relax in my chair. I had been teaching in a higher secondary school for two years now. My life had changed completely since I had joined the noble profession of teaching. My thoughts abruptly ran back to my school days. During those days, I aspired to become a doctor and used to take rigorous medical entrance examination coaching. Three unsuccessful attempts in a row provoked me to take the extreme step. My life would have ended years ago if my parents hadn't found me lying in a pool of blood oozing from my slit wrists and promptly rushed me to a hospital.
I sighed as those horrible memories jittered me. But then I looked at the avid faces of my students and felt pride throbbing through my veins. Now I know why I was rescued from the claws of death and pushed back to life. The Almighty had chosen me for a much crucial mission. And it was to spread the light of knowledge and secure the future of children who are the promise of a better tomorrow.
I held my head high as I felt proud of my profession. Now, I have no regrets for not being able to crack the medical entrance exam. I smiled as I glanced at my pupils. I nodded at them as I was sure that some among them were definitely going to achieve what I couldn't. And then, I am going to say proudly that I was their teacher. All I feel now is immense gratitude towards God for trusting me and handing me the responsibility of guiding and motivating children who are the future of our country.
