The Battle Of Mathematics

The Battle Of Mathematics

Ever since my kid started school, there hasn't been a single day we have spent without our very own Maths War, fought every evening, at home.

A kid weak in Maths is bad news in our country, unfortunately. And I am a mother to one such. The classes rose, the levels rose, the number of tuitions rose but never did the marks.

Initially, I won the battle every time, come what may, I would squeeze in formulae into his head and get marks out. But higher classes were beyond my control and I started losing. He would win, he would escape the homework and tuitions somehow and I was left to seethe in my own anger. Our war had made my kid loathe maths all the more.

Friendly advice from the Maths teacher and timely counseling helped when he was in ninth grade. I now realised we could drop maths altogether and opt for something else. Though this lead to some confusion in the beginning, after a lot of deliberation we let Maths go. Though it meant he couldn't opt for technical courses later, the decision brought a pleasant end to our daily battle.

He is at peace now, we all are. As parents it's significant we understand the strengths and weaknesses of our children. Kids score less in some, not because they are lazy but because they can't. Once they break the key of the subjects they really like, then there's no stopping them.
