“ Gouri get up.. it’s quarter past six. You will be late for school.” Amma shouted.

Gouri turned and covered her face with bedsheet. She pretended as if she didn’t hear her mother’s words.

“I won’t tolerate your disobedience. Just get up and get ready for school.” The final warning of Amma ringed.

“Amma...am not feeling well. I think I am having fever.” Gouri said in her low voice.

“Fever?? Let me check.” Amma straight way landed in Gouri’s room.

“You seem perfectly alright. Who told that you have fever?” Amma declared.

“ I have head ache and body pain. Moreover I feel like vomitting. I can’t go to school today.” Gouri explained in grief.

“But you have your maths exam today.” Amma reminded.

“Oh Amma...that is just a class test. I am on leave today. I want to sleep more.” Gouri said her final words.

“Dont know what is wrong with this girl when she has maths exam.” Amma left the room with a deep sense of disagreement.

Gouri raised her head with a smile over her victory to evade today’s exam. She confirmed if Amma has left. After confirming mother’s leave, she again went into deep sleep. She was sure tomorrow she won’t be having retest.

Next day morning Gouri got up as usual without any heigh and neigh. She left for school without any confusion.

“ It has been many times since she is bunking classes when having maths exam. This has become rather a habit.” Amma s said in dismay to Gouri’s father.

“She is unable to follow maths classes. That’s why she score poorly in maths exams. That itself is a trouble for her.” Father said thinking deep.

“ We must arrange for extra classes for her. How can she run away from the subject as if a devil is attacking her.” Amma said relentlessly.

“Hmmmm.” Father nodded in agreement.

“Why don’t you talk to Ravi sir who is teaching maths in school. Let him know her agony.” Amma suggested.

Father kept thinking without uttering a word.

Few days passed by. One day Gouri came from school howling.

“Amma.......!!!”

“What happened?” Amma asked in doubt.

“You know, today Ravi sir gave me a maths problem. I solved it correctly and he said that I am brilliant.” Amma kept gazing at the shining eyes of seven years old Gouri who was super excited at the appreciation.

“And you know.. Ravi sir has told me that I can excel in maths. Only thing I should do is to practice maths daily. He told that perfect practice makes a man perfect. He even gave me ten problems as home work. He told that I should solve them by myself, without seeking the help of any one else. He said I can take as much time as I need to solve the questions and tomorrow morning I should submit my home work to him.” Gouri said in single breath.

“Is this home work for all?” Amma asked in astonishment.

“No Amma...I am special girl with special maths solving ability. Sir told me that these home work is for me only. Let me take a bath and finish my maths work.” Gouri rushed.

Amma took a deep breath of solace. Some how the maths fear will settle. Gouri rejoiced at her ability to solve maths puzzle by herself. Evening dad arrived from office and discovered bashful Gouri.

“Dad see... I have solved all the maths puzzle by myself. You can check.” Gouri extended her maths note book.

Dad was absolutely confused seeing the questions which were of level one student. He looked at his daughter’s face whose happiness knew no bounds for solving the most simple arithmetic s. Dad understood the tactics of Ravi sir which intended to boost the confidence level of Gouri.

“ Yes..you solved them right.” Dad told in agreement. He smiled from within seeing the twinkling eyes of Gouri.

Next day evening too, Gouri came back screaming and cheering loudly.

“ Sir appreciated me for solving all the questions correctly. He gave me another set of questions too. Let me finish them first.” Gouri was lost in the world of numbers and calculation. Small applause from the teacher did miracles. This became her habit. Ravi sir gave her problems daily. He slowly raised the toughness level and standard of questions. Unknowingly Gouri came in pace with it. In a short span Gouri’s scary maths became her favourite subject. She started loving and passionately solving them. Gouri’s parents were elated seeing the positive change in her.

Years passed by. The igniting spirit of maths flamed with passion and dedication within Gouri. As she grew up, she chose teaching profession and by god’s grace she became a maths teacher.

Her career as teacher fervoured with immense desire to explore and excel. Once a parent came to meet her.

“Teacher, my son is unable to solve maths problems and that is why he is refusing to attend maths exam. Please help us.”

Gouri remembered her own past which escaped the agony of maths. She replied with confidence “ I will take care of him and I am sure he will start loving the subject. You please don’t worry.”

Listening to her words the parent’s eyed filled with tears and he could hardly speak “Thank you teacher.”

Gouri smiled from within and murmured “ A big salute to my teacher, my hero.”
