It has been almost two months since the vacation started. Even before Spoorthi realised her father reminded that the school would open on 1st June which was hardly 10 days away. Spoorthi's mother hearing this was tensed up, as it also meant that there were lots of things to get ready for the school term. She quickly called for Spoorthi and asked if she had completed answering the question paper from the last year exam. This was a mandatory ritual at Spoorthi's school and the principal was very particular that kids cannot bridge to the next class without understanding the previous year. Spoorthi and even her classmates hated this part of the vacation where they are forced to study and answer the question paper again. Spoorthi was a good student, she used to complete all her home work in time, but maths was always a nagging subject and she preferred to keep it to the last moment. After being nudged by her mother couple of days Spoorthi reluctantly got out the maths paper. As she sat down on the verandah to solve the problems the number appeared to be floating around and the symbols disappeared, such was Spoorthi's fear mathematics. She kept tapping her pencil on the wooden desk hoping somehow the numbers settled down. Seeing the plight, her mother asked Spoorthi to take help from Vijaya Spoorthi's aunt who was home for her delivery. Spoorthi ran into her aunt's room. They both sat together and slowly solved out the paper, Spoorthi gave a big hug and she had more reason to love having aunt home.

While Spoorthi was sad that vacation was coming to an end, she also was equally excited for the new year ahead. Spoorthi would now get new clothes, uniforms, bag and shoes. Of all the new things her favourite was to buy the school backpack. She went with her mother for shopping the things needed to the school. They went to the city centre where the books and other school material were sold in bulk and hence cheaper. Spoorthi's mother knew the area well, she would easily navigate through the gullies of the market to find the correct stores. First they went to Nanda tailor who had uniforms of all the schools in the town. Spoorthi's uniform was a white and brown chequered shirt, with a brown skirt during weekdays and full whites for Saturday, they also had matching ribbon tape to wear. Next they went to book stores, the school had given a checklist of different types of books four lines, boxed , plain and normal ruled notebooks to buy. Spoorthi asked her mother to buy a new pencil box, she chose a pink pencil box which had a sharpener attached and also was a double decker. After this came her favourite part buying a bag. Once they arrived at the store her mother afraid of getting late choose what was available at the front and asked the shop vendor to pack. Spoorthi refused right away to take it as for her backpack was a unique identity. She pleaded her mother to allow her to go through the pile of backpacks and find her match. She quickly dug up the pile looking at each of the print on the backup, as she went through she saw a picture of beautiful pink bicycle printed on one of them. This instantly reminded her of the lady bird cycle she loved, both mother-daughter duo bargained hard and agreed to buy the backpack. Spoorthi was simply elated to have found her matching backpack.

Finally, the day of the school reopening arrived. Spoorthi was excited, she woke up early and finished her bath, Pooja and breakfast quickly with no usual mess. Spoorthi's father dropped her at the school, she was early and sat inside the new classroom. She was eagerly looking at the door and waited for her friends whom she missed during the vacation... At sharp 8 the bell rang and all the kids ran to the ground for assembly. The head master welcomed the kids to new year of school followed by school song and assembly ended with the national anthem. The entire ground filled with excitement and laughter kids went back chit chatting back to the classes.

As it was the first day at school they were only to have half day with introduction to the class teacher. Spoorthi was nervous about who would be the class teacher as she secretly hoped that her favourite teacher Yashoda madam would continue as the class teacher from last year. Yashoda Madam was their science teacher and she brought the subject alive as she teaches and that made all the kids to like her the most. To the delight of all the kids, it was truly Yashoda madam who walked in, the kids let out a cry in excitement. After the attendance, the teacher asked the kids to share what they did in vacation. Each kid had a different and exciting story to tell. Spoorthi on her chance told the class about how she found her pet Krishna the black cat, her time in the village, the fair, her adventures with the friends learning bicycle and also the fear during the public strike. Spoorthi was convinced that she had the most exciting story of all the other kids in her class. After all it was school and it cannot be just stories, before the day wrapped up, they learnt about different parts of the plant. The long bell rang and the students ran out to home....

Now that the school started, wait for the next vacation starts !!!
