Any journey that begins has certainly had a starting point but does it have any end?

I guess not, because as long as we live, we learn to thrive, we fall, we get up, and then we try again. This loop continues as long as life exists. I still remember how my Amma used to wake me up every day by singing a wake-up song and by getting me a cup of coffee. After drinking that coffee, I used to write about my dreams in my diary.

Today, I feel the turning point of my life came because of Raghav Uncle. He helped me in rediscovering and reassessing my life goal. Raghav Uncle was my Dad's best friend. He used to visit my home once a week. He used to help orphaned and mentally ill people by giving them food, medicines, clothes and sheltering them.

Though he was not financially affluent still he used to help them in his ways. Apart from his regular job in a private company working 10 AM to 6 PM, sometimes he used to do night duties to earn extra money.

He didn't have any family, and he had decided to remain unmarried just for his social cause.

Looking at his plight, I always felt bad. He never had a life for himself. One day, I asked Raghav Uncle, why are you living like this? Are you happy? You don't have a wife and kids. You work so hard for the whole day. Uncle, I find you pathetic, I said.

After hearing all these words, he smiled and he left without saying a word.

On that evening, my dad, who was hearing my whole conversation called me out near our garden area. He showed me the fruit-bearing plants and said; see every life, has its meaning and purpose. I am your dad, I am like this plant, and you are my fruit. I limited my life to look after my family. It was my choice, and it gives me happiness.

Then, he showed me a tree across the road. It was tall, and it was the lone tree in that area. People used to take shelter from it from time to time. It was green and huge in form. That tree is your Raghav Uncle, and it was his choice, to live like that tree. It is his journey, and this is mine. We both are equally happy in our journey of lives. Because happiness is a choice.

My dad asked me to go and help Raghav Uncle coming Sunday. I was remorseful because of the way I spoke to him that day. But Raghav Uncle welcomed me with an open heart and introduced me to his family.

The shelter house was his home and the people who were living there were his family members. His face was gleaming in a smile.

That day, I saw the most beautiful smile in this world, the smile of contentment.

I realized that I never saw Raghav Uncle unhappy or sad. Contrary to this, I saw many people complaining and being sad about things they do not possess. I had decided that day I will go to Raghav Uncle's shelter house every Sunday to help him out.

The forgotten feeling which is the most humble and basic in this world is humanity.

I learnt that humanity is the basic yet greatest virtue of life.

My perception of life changed thereafter, and till today, I remember Raghav Uncle's smile and the words my dad said that day, which helped me realize that whatever choices we make in our lives, we need to be kind and humanely.

And we all have our journeys in our lives, with the choices we make, and we have to live with them till the last breath of our lives, without forgetting the basic virtues of life.

And my Amma still wakes me up with the hot coffee and song. But Instead of writing a diary, I go help my parents in taking care of the garden.
