Indira Gandhi was the first woman prime Minister of India. She was born in Allahabad on 19th November 1917. Her father, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru was the first Prime Minister of India. As a child, she admired Gandhiji very much. She took part in the struggle for the freedom of the country. She was even jailed for it.
Indira Gandhi had her early education at Shantiniketan. She also studied in England and Switzerland. She was married to Feroze Gandhi and had two sons, Sanjay and Rajiv. Sanjay died in
a plane crash, Rajiv became the prime minister after his mother's death.
Indira Gandhi was a very strong and determined leader. She remained PM for about 15 years. India made rapid progress under her leadership. She was brutally assassinated by her own bodyguards on 31st October 1984. It shocked people all over the world.
Mrs. Gandhi is still remembered for her great leadership. Her popular slogan GARIBI HATAO remove poverty forever, is once again a battling cry of her party.
