There are two types of ghosts found everywhere. One type is well-wisher for mankind another one is harmful. This is a ghost story based on a legend about a benevolent ghost who had helped a man in need. This story I had heard from my late granny.

Jignipatapur is a village in Cuttack district. A gentleman who was a government servant had belonged to that village. His name was Nari. One day one of her colleagues was coming to meet him on some official matter. He got off from the train at the railway station situated nearby Jignipatapur which was two kilometers away. He was unknown about the place and was a newcomer. So he inquired about the proper route to Nari baboo's house. After some time he entered the village. But still, he could not find the house though he searched here and there in the village streets.

It was a rainy day. Sprinkling rain drops drenched his dress. He reached nearby a meadow which was adjacent to the village. During that period, most of the villagers were staying at their homes after the evening. It was 9 pm. Suddenly he marked a villager in the meadow who was trying to search out his cow. The villager was holding a Lantern and sticking it in his hands putting a turban on his head. He was called by the name of his cow " Laxmi! O Laxmi! Where are you? Aaa Aaa" at the top of his voice. The stranger called him and asked, " Can you show me the house of Mr. Nari Babu? I am his friend. I came from Calcutta. " The man did not answer, instead he accompanied the stranger for guiding him up to the Nari baboo's house on the village thoroughfare. By and by the stranger reached Nari baboo's house and the cowherd departed.

While Nari Babu saw his colleague then he became very happy and took him into his house after greeting. Nari babu was astonished and asked his colleague, ": How did you find out my house? It is a remote rustic area aloof from the urbanity. " The colleague replied, " I could not actually find out your home unless a villager helped me. " Again Nari babu asked, " What is his name " Then the colleague replied, " He was wearing a turban on his head and holding a stick and a lantern was searching for his cattle in your village meadow calling by its name as Laxmi. " After listening to it Nari babu was taken aback and told his colleague, " Oh Oh! the cow owner whom you saw is not a man but a ghost. He died by snakebite one year ago while he was searching for his lost cow. His name was Gopal. He was a very noble man and kind-hearted. He always helps the villagers in their needs at his best. After death, he has been also helping needy persons as yet. He is a good ghost who has been haunting our village since then. " The colleague guest thanked late Gopal and prayed God for the emancipation of his sacred soul. Then both the colleagues took their supper and took rest.
