Oof! It is so hot. I feel I will melt in the scorching heat at any moment! Wait, something is happening to me. I am turning into gas! I suddenly feel myself floating in the air, along with a few of my neighbors, who like me, are also in a gaseous state. I felt dizzy now with all this flying business. Now I have reached the sky, and it is much cooler here. I sigh with relief as I change into my usual form again. All I understand is that this sudden change in me had something to do with heat.

Then I, and the other drops and droplets huddle together in this strange, new environment in the sky. That is when I realize that we are in a cloud! Or rather, we are the cloud. This was actually fun! I could see everything from up here. Then I see that more and more drops and droplets (some of them known to me) are joining us continuously. Soon, we had no space left. Yet more drops were coming and suddenly somebody shoved me hard from behind. I started falling. I didn’t feel so nice any more. I was scared. So, when I saw that some more drops were falling behind me, I felt relieved. At least I was not alone in this.

As I neared to the ground, I saw several people, humans, point at me and say something. Then, a young boy ran to his mother, shouting “Mommy, look, it is raining!”. And so it was. Now we, the droplets were coming down in full force. I observed reactions of the humans I could see – some ran indoors (I couldn’t believe that they were actually scared of us), others stayed where they were, looking up towards us, and yet others held some strange looking things over their heads.

I fell in a giant tub-like structure along with thousands of other drops and droplets. There was a thin pipe connected to this tub and the drops were going inside together. I, too, followed them inside.

The pipe seemed endless and I was exhausted now. Finally, we came to a glass structure and I think I overheard some of the older drops say that it was a filter. All the droplets were going in one by one, then something was done to them, and they came out through another pipe. My turn came. I went. I began to feel something poking at me, brushing against me. After a few seconds, I was pushed through the pipe and landed in some sort of a container. Some other drops were already there. And then, I looked up and saw a human face. The girl to whom the face belonged now lifted the container we were in and was taking it closer to her mouth. I suddenly had a horrible realization. She is going to drink us!

Some of the drops had already gone inside her mouth. Soon, I was going to go too…

“Wait,” I said. The girl stopped and looked inside the container, at us, puzzled. I could feel all the other droplets staring at me too. I had just broken our number one rule – never ever speak to a human. I took a deep breath as the girl’s eyes met mine. “Yes”, I said, “I just spoke to you”. The girl squealed and took me out and kept me in her palm. “You are really cute!”, she said. “I am going to keep you as my pet!”

And, so, here I am, the world’s first-ever pet droplet.
