Being Woman
Being Woman
Conceived and nurtured in a womb,
From a fist-size ball of flesh to an actual form
She came into being like any other tiny newborn
Her shrill cries echoed in the air,
And there came the judgement, in hushed voices, in open sneers
It's a girl, it's a girl, it's a girl they whispered
Poor thing, one more to struggle in this dark wide world
Time did its part & flew like the wind
She grew to learn only beauty can be her currency to win
That it's not okay if she doesn't fit the system
And nobody cares until she voiced only harmless opinions
Nobody explained to her that why she should love pink
But everybody told her to be careful of strangers who wink
At thirteen, when a new phase in her life arrived
And painted her red with pain, fear and strife
Many warned her not to venture far in the night
But they had no answer when she got abducted in broad daylight
Confused, weak and docile, they made her
Incapable of knowing herself or her potential
Struggling to understand the hypocrite world
She still kindled hope to learn its way and find home
She kept attempting to fly and touch the sky
Only to fall and realize that true liberation is found in trying to rise
That it's okay if the mask of beauty wears off
That it's okay if nobody validates or understand her thoughts
That it's okay to age gracefully and truly live
That it's okay to find or keep seeking her inner self
That she was not born to prove anything to anyone
She was born to be the knight of her own and rescue herself
That she was born to try and make errors
To rewrite her fate, find new roads to traverse
To learn the lesson that nobody can give her power,
And that if she wants it, she’ll have to take it
It took time but she eventually learnt that she was of value and was worthwhile
That she held the power to create one of her own kind
That only she can pull apart her body
And accommodate another life for nine long months
That questioning the holiness of her blood was foolish
That even though this is a man’s world, she held the thunder within to rule it
That if there’s anything she should be in life,
Then she should be proud to bleed, she should be proud of being born a woman.
