Water Learns Something New!

When the world was very new, everything in the world was very new and all. Rocks were happy being big and strong, the wind was busy peeking in all the corners of the world and water was enjoying just splashing around.

One day, as water was busy splashing around and getting everything wet, it struck something hard that didn't move when it pushed. It turned around to see what it was. There, in its path, was a huge rock. Water had not seen anything like it. It poked at the rock - poke poke. The rock opened an eye and asked, "What do you want?" Water said, "What are you? Why can't I move you?" The rock yawned and said, "I am a rock, I am solid. You can't move a big rock like me, you are liquid after all."

Water decided that it wanted to be like the rock! It thought, "The rock just sits and becomes so hard. Maybe if I also sit with it, I'll turn into a solid too." So water hugged the rock tightly. The rock opened an eye again and asked water, "What exactly are you doing?" Water replied, "I am trying to turn into solid, just like you." The rock shrugged and went back to sleep. Water kept holding on to the rock.

As night fell, the rock became very cold and water felt cold too. And it could not move. In the morning, water noticed that it was no longer soft and flowing. It was hard and stuck to the rock. Water had become solid ice!

Water was very happy. But as the sun rose, the rock became hot again and water melted back to liquid. While water was feeling glad that it could now turn into a solid, a strong wind began to blow. Water looked up and wondered aloud, "How nice it would be if I too could fly around and look at the top of trees and mountains!" The wind heard this and laughed, "You can't fly, you're liquid. I am air. I am so light, that's why I can fly."

When water heard this, it decided to try turning into the air. It held on to the wind! As the sun shone down, the wind became very hot, and water started feeling hot too. Soon, it felt lighter, and suddenly, it was flying with the wind! Water had become water vapour!

From that day on, whenever water feels cold, it turns into solid ice and when it feels hot, it turns into water vapor!
