I had just finished my evening jog and was covered in sweat. It felt good. With the office work and moving into the new apartment I didn't have much time for a jog this week. It was late but the park and the walk back home were safe routes, otherwise my husband would worried to death by now. I couldn't help my smile as I thought about the term 'husband'. He was mine now and nothing could take that away.

I reached the entrance of the building, smiled at the security and went in. I liked the safety our apartment offered us. I got into and out of the elevator thinking of how nice a bath would be and wondering if he had made dinner. I pressed the calling bell at the door and waited. Nobody came. I tried the handle and it was unlocked. Shaking my head I went in. We had discussed about this a thousand times, he always forgot about the lock. His excuse was we were in the safest neighborhood ever,so why lock doors. I disagree and I am right, one can never be too safe.

The apartment was unaturally quiet. That was weird, when it was his turn to cook the entire building could hear his fight with the vessels and the spices. I went to kitchen to search for him. When I reached the kitchen,my eyes widened in horror, my heart stopped beating and then started to race, there lying on the floor was my husband, my love, my soulmate and surrounding him was a pool of blood. I wanted to scream, but I couldn't. I knew I needed to do something but I couldn't move. But I had to, I couldn't let him leave me just like that. We had plans, we had dreams. I silenced my thoughts knowing I'll break if I didn't.

I decided I need to call the hospital and turned to search for my phone. That's when I saw him, he had his face covered, he was dressed in black, he looked like a killer straight out of the movies and he had a gun pointed at me. The sight of the gun paralysed me physically and mentally. I saw his fingers getting ready to pull the trigger. The last thing I would ever see. Then I closed my eyes.

But instead of the 'BANG!' I expected, I heard a 'POP!!'. I opened my eyes to see that I had confetti all over me. The man infront of me removed his mask to reveal the face of a friend of mine. I felt hands on my waist and turned to see that it was my husband. "Guess the fake blood worked great", he whispered in my ear. I felt worry and fear being replaced by anger. I was about to explain what I really felt about his fake blood when I heard people singing 'Happy birthday'. I turned again and this time saw a room full of people and a cake with candles. I had forgotten my birthday but he remembered and decided to kill me with a surprise. I placed a lid on my boiling rage and smiled for the guests. Keeping the smile in place I faced my husband and told him, " I love you more than my life and I'm going to smother you to death while you sleep". He smiled his cute smile that made me forgive him for everything. I shaked my head for the second time that evening and went to change my sweat drenched clothes into something presentable for my surprise party.
