The Sparrow

Long long ago there lived a boy named Rohan. He was just eleven years old. One day, he was alone and thus he felt very much boredom.

So he decided to go to the nearby park. There in that park many people were moving helter Skelter. But he was alone, playing in his own way. While playing, he suddenly saw a small sparrow perched on a big rock.

He slowly advanced near it, but to his utter surprise, he noticed that the little bird didn't fly.

He gathered a little bit of courage and stretched his two hands exactly in a way he used to catch cricket balls behind the wicket like a good wicket-keeper he picked it up and thereafter he noticed that one of its wings was bleeding badly.

He ran towards his home to help the poor bird.    His parents were out on a vacation. They decided to take Rohan along with them too, but then Rohan's examinations were approaching. So they left him at home with his grandma.

When he reached home carrying the injured sparrow in his hands, his Grandma shouted from the living room, "Rohan! Rohan! What's that? Why do you bring animals in the house? Last month you people bought this Spaniel dog. And now this bird!!"  Rohan calmly explained how he found it. After examining the bird, his grandma arranged some cloth. They gently wrapped it around the bird's wings. After the treatment, Rohan went upstairs to his room and kept the bird near the window. The park was quite clearly visible through that window.

Whenever Rohan checked the bird, it usually sat near the window, staring at the single tree in the centre of the park. He always thought about what was so special about that tree.

The next day, he decided to look up the tree. He climbed it up and saw that there was a nest and inside it he found sparrow chicks, waiting for their mother to bring them food. He realised why the sparrow mother was so worried. He took the nest carefully with the chicks and ran towards his home. His grandma asked, "What happened now?" Rohan replied, "Dadi, I found the nest of our sparrow, and in that, see here are the sparrow's chicks!" He went upstairs and kept the mother and chicks together in his room to avoid the curious eyesight of the crows. He usually fed them at afternoons and nights.

After some days, when his parents returned, the family of 4 was out eating in a restaurant. While returning home, Rohan by chance noticed a big hoarding, which read "Save sparrows. They are becoming extinct from our forests." He realised how he contributed to the environment without even knowing much about it!
