The Rain

The Rain

High above the sky is the realm of heavenly beings. Amongst them lived Rain. He was always ready for a good game of hiding and seek. He had many friends, Cloud, Wind, Thunder, and Lightning were his best buddies.

One day God ordered him to go to Earth. "Please dear Lord, I don't want to go to Earth. I get bored down there," he pleaded. But God would have none of it. "It's already late Rain. You should have been to Earth days ago. Now don't delay. Go immediately."

No one can refuse God, not even Rain. He made arrangements to leave for Earth. But he was sad, "Everyone is up here, even the Sun, and I alone have to go down." When Rain is unhappy, he pours in a slow drizzle. This drip-drop was taking a long time to reach Earth.

On the way, Rain met Rainbow. "Hello Rain, we have been waiting for you. But what's the matter? You look glum." Looking at Rainbow's cheerful face, Rain felt even more gloomy, "All my friends are up there having a good time. I alone have to descend to Earth."

"Everyone has been awaiting your arrival. You have many friends here too," Rainbow said. "You do many nice things here. It is because of you that the trees grow and the animals and humans quench their thirst. Nothing would survive on Earth without you. Look, how the peacocks are dancing to welcome you, the trees are greeting you with open arms and the children are waiting to jump in the puddles."

The Rain had never realized this. He heard them cheer and was glad to see their joyful faces. He smiled brightly and poured down in a bigger drip-drop and pitter-patter.
