Chapter 1

It was a chilly morning in Paris, I was reading on the couch while Philip was sipping tea at the balcony. A letter was slipped under the door.

‘Philip a letter is here for you’, I said

He picked up the letter and all of a sudden, his face was etched in worry.

‘Come on George it’s time to leave’, he said.

‘Aren't we due to leave in another hour’, I said.

‘We are needed elsewhere’, he said gravely.

I was used to leaving at a moment’s notice and his reaction led me to think that a mystery was near at hand.

We checked out of the hotel and took the first ride to London. After reaching London he told me that Mr. Thompson has been found dead and Mrs. Thompson thinks that her husband might have been murdered and she had called Philip to find the cause of her husband’s untimely death.

Chapter 2

Mrs. Thompson’s manor, Altestry, was a magnificent two-storey building with a garden of 12 acres. We arrived at half past five and were greeted by Mrs. Thompson herself. She ushered us inside. ‘Thank you Mr.Philip for coming on such short notice’, said Mrs.Thompson,‘It is truly an unfortunate affair.’

It’s my pleasure replied Philip.

‘You must be starving, would you like some tea.’

‘Yes please’ we said at once.

‘I would like to be taken to the scene of the crime’ said Philip after he was done with tea.

‘Of course, Randolph here will take you there immediately.’

The room was a mess and had not been tampered with since the murder. Only the body had been removed and placed in the shed below for examination by the police.

Randolph escorted us to the shed to see the body. The shed was located down the stream, it had all the tools and was a murky old place withcop webs. There we were introduced to the inspector; he was tall and lean with dark skin and angular features there was a prominent scar on his neck. He introduced himself as Inspector Jasper. ‘I am Philip and this here is George, pleasure making your acquaintance’.

‘We believe Mr. Thompson was murdered between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. He was killed using a dagger from behind.’, said the Inspector.

‘I would like a copy of Mr. Thompson’s post mortem and the contents of his will’, said Philip.

Chapter 3

On receiving the required information we went to question the suspects. There were 4 suspects- the butler, the chef, the gardener and the housekeeper.

‘Where were you between the time of the murder?’, asked Philip.

‘I was in the library getting some bank documents Mr. Thompson requested’, replied Randolph.

Philip posed the same question to the chef who replied ‘I was in the kitchen preparing the tea Mr.Thompson takes before going to bed before which I was cleaning the kitchen’

‘Was that all Mr.Thompson took before going to bed?’

 ‘He took his sleeping pills’

‘Did you see anyone while giving the pills?’

‘No, however I did hear Mr.Thompson telling the gardener not to disturb him again’

The gardener’s reply to the question was ‘I was collecting some apples from the tree down the stream for Mr.Thompson, as he had developed a fondness for apple juice in the morning’

‘For how long has Mr.Thompson been taking this juice?’, asked Philip.

‘For almost 40-50 days’, replied the gardener.

When the question was asked to the housekeeper, she said

‘I was taking out the waste at around quarter past nine and started cleaning the rooms at half past nine’

‘Has there been any change in the type of waste over the past 3 months?’

‘No’, replied the housekeeper at once.

After this Philip excused himself and went for a walk to settle his mind.

Chapter 4

I was very confused and to help soothe myself I do what always calms my nerves, I started drawing. I started drawing the floor plan of the Altestry.

We had Stayed the night in a hotel across the manor. It was a dark and stuffy place, sunlight Gave a golden glow to Philip who was sitting on a leather armchair, he had been sitting there for the past hour. Suddenly his eyes sparkled lighting his eyes. He said ‘Voila! I have done it! Let us go to the manor the culprit, he’s caught, I know who the murderer is.’

Chapter 5

This unfortunate event does not have one but two guilty criminals said, Philip. Everyone had gathered in the guest room to listen to Phillip’s theory. Philip said ‘one murder had been waiting for this opportunity for quite some time and used the very apple seeds of Albert Thompson ‘s juice to make Cyanide. He administered it to the chef’s tea while going back to the garden. The other murderer had used the library to go to through the terrace into Mr. Thompson’s room. He waited for the chef to go out of the room and stabbed Mr.Thompson from behind. I give you the two murderers, the butler, and the gardener.’

There were many gasps of surprise and Inspector Jasper took the butler and the chef for trial in the court.

Both of them were given a trial in court and were found guilty, they were provided with lifetime imprisonment. Philip and I returned to Paris waiting for our next case.
