The Case of the Crystal Necklace Chapter-2

At dinner, Audrey was least bothered about what she was eating. She took only a little cornbread but a lot of cheese, put too much pepper on her macaroni, and aimlessly kept scooping out of her empty dish of banana split.

It was dark when it happened. But like her, at least one person would have switched on their flashlight, and a crystal necklace wouldn’t have gone unnoticed.

After dinner, Audrey caught up with Maybell and asked her all she remembered since she showed the necklace.

“I had shown it, and everybody was asking me about it. It slipped from my hands and fell. I had just picked it up and worn it for safety, when, suddenly, there was a blackout. Just as I switched my flashlight on, the announcement came on the speakers. That’s all I remember,” replied Maybell.

Maybell had shown it off only moments ago, so anybody who wanted to steal it wouldn’t have been able to get to the control room, switch the power off, run back, and get the necklace without anybody noticing. On the other hand, it couldn’t have been a coincidence.

Just then, the bedtime bell rang, and Audrey got into bed, still contemplating on the crystal necklace. She heard Maybell talking and sobbing in her sleep about the necklace. And she, Audrey, would find it for her.

The next day, Audrey forgot all about the necklace, until she spotted the control room. She asked the warden if she could have a look around.

It was a small room. The residence rooms’ electricity was controlled by separate switches. There were switches for every room including the reception, cafeteria, sports room, and classrooms. In a corner was a switch labelled “Campus power”. This was probably the switch that had been turned off, causing a blackout.

She left the room, wondering how the necklace could be stolen so quickly. Maybell would register a complaint, but the school authorities couldn’t get very far with investigating, either.

“Somebody must have snatched the necklace before Maybell switched the light on,” thought Audrey, “And the blackout might have been a coincidence-somebody might have switched the power off by mistake. But who?”
