Saving Gajju, the Baby Elephant

Sonu had dinner and then after that, her mother sent her to bed. Then from her bed, Sonu called Dadi her granny to tell her a nice story so that she could go to sleep. Dadi was in the habit of telling stories and putting Sonu to sleep. So Dadi thought of a story from her ready stock. Dadi began with the story.

Guddu was a little boy living in a small town. He had a pet dog named Bholu. Bholu was really a puppy left behind by his mother a few months ago. Then there was Chimpu the little monkey kid. When Chimpu 's mummy and papa and their monkey troop was in town then Chimpu would play with Bholu and Guddu. The three were very friendly and no one was afraid of each other. Guddu was very happy because a circus had come to their town. The circus had put up their tent very close to where Guddu stayed. Guddu, Bholu and Chimpu were playing out in the field. When all of a sudden they were joined by an elephant calf. It was very playful and wanted to play with them. At first Guddu and his two friends were surprised to see the baby elephant. Also they were a little afraid. But when they found him to be playful they did not mind at all. They named him Gajju. All day long they played with mud and grass and water from the small pond nearby.

One day while playing with water in the pond Gajju went a little towards the middle away from the banks. Guddu and his two friends knew not to go to the middle of the pond. Because from the middle they could not come back. So they were playing near the banks. Chimpu and Bholu were jumping in excitement trying to stop Gajju from going to the middle. But Gajju loved water as he had seen his mama and papa bathe in the river for hours.

So while going towards the middle of the pond Gajju's legs got stuck in the mud. He could not move and started squealing in fright. Guddu. Bholu and Chimpu got alarmed. They got in a huddle to decide how to save Gajju. Hearing the squeals Gajju's mother came out searching for her son. The circus owner called the police.

The police came with big ropes and with a big crane. Police asked the Mahout of the elephant to tie the ropes from the crane to Gajju's leg. Then when Gajju was safely tied the crane pulled at the rope. Soon Gajju was out of the water safely. Then Guddu, Bholu, Chimpu and Gajju joined the fun. They were jumping and laughing with delight as Gajju was now out of danger.

Dadi finished the story and turned towards Sonu to see her fast asleep.
