Part III: The Core Override
Sarah didn't hesitate. "Kaelen, override the thruster safety limiters. Give us every ounce of emergency momentum away from the surface. Maya, prepare to overload the fusion core's secondary buffer."
"Overloading the buffer will destroy our FTL drive!" Maya protested. "We’ll be stranded!"
"We’ll be alive," Sarah countered. "Do it!"
Sarah scrambled to the manual engineering station. As the alien beam pulled Triton apart beneath them, she rerouted the ship's entire auxiliary energy output directly into the terraforming array's connection cable. Instead of trying to cut the alien signal, she flooded it with raw, unstructured plasma discharge—a massive burst of thermal noise.
Down in the ice, the crystalline root overloaded. A blinding flash of purple light erupted from the drill site, shooting skyward and striking the central core of the geometric entity.
The massive construct shuddered. Its light flickered violently as the chaotic feedback disrupted its precise mathematical matrix. The gravitational beam collapsed, sending shockwaves through local space that threw the Astraea thousands of kilometers backward into the dark.
Inside the bridge, red emergency lights bathed the crew in a dim glow. The alarms faded into a low, static hum.
Sarah pushed herself up from the console and looked out the viewport. The entity was folding in on itself, collapsing back into the spatial rift until it vanished entirely, leaving behind a shattered Triton and a silent sky.
"Status report," Sarah said, clearing the smoke from her eyes.
"FTL drive is melted," Maya breathed, staring at her dead instruments. "System propulsion is down to ten percent. We're drifting."
Kaelen walked up beside Sarah, looking out at the broken moon and the silent void beyond. "We saved the ship, Cap. But where do we go now?"
Sarah looked at the drifting shards of Triton, glowing faintly with lingering energy, and then out toward the distant, untouched light of Sol.
"We patch the hull," Sarah said softly, a tired smile tugging at her lips. "And then we figure out how to navigate by the stars again."
