Introduction

The rust on the outer hull of the Astraea hummed—a low, rhythmic vibration that felt less like machinery and more like a heartbeat.
Captain Sarah Chen wiped a layer of frost from the viewport. Outside, the blue-white gas giant Triton hung suspended against the void, immense and indifferent. They were three months past the outer edge of known space, running on degraded ion thrusters and recycled air that tasted perpetually of copper.
"Bridge, this is Kaelen," a voice crackled through the comms, warped by static. "I’m at the deep-core drill site. The terraforming array isn't broken, Cap. It’s... altered."
Sarah pressed her comm-bead. "Altered how, Kaelen? Be specific."
"The circuit pathways aren't copper or silver anymore. They've grown. Like crystalline roots." A pause stretched long enough for Sarah to hear the heavy breathing in Kaelen's suit. "And Sarah... it’s generating a signal. Down into the ice."
Part I: The Whisper in the Ice
Sarah descended into the drilling pit, her suit’s floodlights cutting through swirling plumes of frozen methane. Triton was supposed to be dead—a frozen rock designated for industrial strip-mining by the Sol Coalition.
When she reached the bottom, Kaelen was kneeling beside the primary drill bit. The steel machinery was fused into a massive, translucent spire that plunged thousands of meters down into the crust. Inside the crystal, faint pulses of bioluminescent light rippled in complex, mathematical sequences.
"It’s an amplified relay," Kaelen whispered, pointing his hand-scanner at the structure. "Every time our terraforming lasers hit the ice, this thing absorbed the energy and translated it. It’s been transmitting a broadcast toward the galactic core for two weeks."
"Can we shut it down?" Sarah asked, her hand instinctively drifting to the plasma cutter on her belt.
"I tried," Kaelen replied, turning to look at her. Through his visor, his eyes were wide with a mix of awe and terror. "When I cut the main power line, the crystal didn't stop. It started drawing power directly from the ship's fusion reactor. Sarah, it knows we're here. And whatever it called... it just got a response."
Above them, the ship's proximity alarms began to wail, a muffled sound traveling through the frozen ground.
