Honesty is the Best Policy

Mothers are the world's best teachers. My mother always used to tell me “Honesty is the best policy”

And I used to wonder why does she keep saying so. But one incident at a very young age made me believe it.

When I was is in grade 4, I had a best friend his name was Rahul, we used to have lots of fun in school, share our tiffins, had playdates on weekends we were literally together the whole time. But he had one bad habit of telling lies at the drop of hat. Unknowingly I supported him many times. Many times teacher had warned him, he was also sent for counselling sessions but as he was good in studies and sports teachers thought he will get over it with growing age.

But for opening my eyes god had other plans.

Once during our 2 unit test exam, he had bought a chit and had kept it in his pencil box I was unaware of it. When the teacher was doing rounds checking our things he just flung it onto my desk and it landed on my writing board and to my horror next was my turn for checking and I went blank as I did not know what to do. The teacher saw the chit and thought it was mine she shouted at me and I was in tears and kept telling her Rahul threw it on my desk it's his after a lot of persuasions she decided to check the handwriting and found out the truth it was indeed Rahul’s. She told me to have water and relax. She even apologized. But Rahul had a hard day as his parents were called and he was’nt allowed to give that exam. I felt bad for him and also for what he did.

For a few days, It was difficult for me to ignore him and to be away from him but I think that was good for me. Had he realised his mistake I would have forgiven him but he did not and continued as before. My mother gave me the strength to move on and make new friends. She also said its ok to not have many friends but keeping the wrong ones will not help you anytime in life.

And that’s when I learned Honesty is the best policy.
