History Of Clothing
Laura went to a supermarket with her mother. Laura saw a beautiful frock and she asked her mother to buy it for her. Laura's mother bought the frock for Laura. Both the mother and daughter left the supermarket and reached their home. After some time, while reading a storybook, Laura saw a picture of early humans. She went to her mom and both started talking.
Laura: Mom. See this picture! Early humans were so funny! And their dress is like a gunny bag! Hahaha!!
Mom: Laura, there's nothing to laugh about! At that time, clothes weren't invented! Firstly, the early humans didn't even wear the gunny bag type dresses! They used to roam naked!
Laura: So, mom how were the clothes invented? And how do today's frocks, t-shirts, skirts, jeans come into this world?
Mom: I'll explain everything! Today, I'll tell you the History of Clothing.
A very very long time ago, the Early humans used to roam here and there naked. They didn't know about Clothing! But as time passed, they started wearing different things present in nature to protect themselves from extreme cold and cover their body. Early humans' clothes were made of mostly animal fur or leaves of trees. They wrapped animal fur around their body to keep themselves warm. They also used needles, to make holes and stitch the animal skin. And the thin skin of animals was used as a belt to tie up the hard skin around the body. As time passed, people started wearing different types of clothes from the naturally present things. Have you heard of Catal Huyuk?
Laura: Yes! It's one of the oldest civilizations, I guess.
Mom: You're correct! Catal Huyuk, which is in Turkey, in the present world, the residents of Catal Huyuk grew flax and made linen from it. They also used wool to make clothes. And one interesting fact about them is that: They wore jewelry which was made up of Stones, Seashells, Bones!
Laura: That's much more informing!
Mom: That's not enough! Let me tell you about the Egyptians! The Egyptians were pro at making clothes. They used palm, reed, flax plants to make different types of fabrics. But they mostly wore linen clothes! Do you know why?
Laura: Because of Egypt's hot climate?
Mom: Awesome! Now, the last thing which I want to tell you, The Chinese Civilization. The Chinese Civilization brought a very major revolution in clothing. How? They invented Silk! The silk which they invented was made by the silkworms, which were accidentally discovered. Soon, the Chinese realized that silk is strong and durable and can be used for clothing! They started making silk clothes and soon, the silk clothes became so popular that they were exported to different countries. And there was a route to export silk which was called the Silk Route and it was 4,000 miles long!
Laura: Oh My God! Really, the clothing is wonderful! And it's history too! But Mom, I have a question! Shall I ask?
Mom: You shall!
Laura: Approximately, when was clothing invented?
Mom: Well, approximately it was invented some 5,00,000 years ago.
Laura: Wow! Clothing is wonderful! Thanks, Mom for telling me the History of Clothing!
Laura giggled.
