I awakened with a start. With all my might, I struggled in an attempt to break free from the ties that held me down to a hospital stretcher. I fumed with raw rage and at that moment, I realized how chickens, who are about to get slaughtered, feel.
My gaze shifted from the ties that held me captive to the room where I was held, hostage. Brain scans, blood samples, and piles after piles of notebooks lay scattered around me.
A familiar creak from the door announced Doctor Graham’s return. “I see that you have regained consciousness”, he said with the same deadpan expression as earlier. His voice was high-pitched and whiny like a horse who has been left to starve by his own master.
“What do you want from me?”, I growled with a ferocity that shocked me. “You and your imprudent cellmate have something special that no one has”, he squeaked.
“Special? I don’t know about Azazel but I’m a nobody- a girl, who from the time of her birth has faced nothing but abandonment and tragedy. I finally made a life for myself and now, you want to take that away from me because of some stupid cryptic nonsense about me being special!” I burst out. Anger coursed through my veins and my hazel eyes blazed with resentment.
I was unable to comprehend what he wanted and why I had just blurted out my entire miserable life story but I knew one thing for sure- my captors would not get away with this. They would pay with their lives. The thought of revenge fuelled some sort of vindictive, homicidal part of me but as long as it helped me escape, I couldn’t care less about the ramifications.
