Can Everyone Be Musical?

Can Everyone Be Musical?

Music as a subject is considered a tough one meant for children who are from musical families or have a musical background or born with a musical ear.

On the contrary. research points out that music is for all age groups and for people of all countries, caste, creed, and color. Then, my question is why is everyone not learning music or some variations of it?

Let us consider the different aspects of music. One, music learning is not easily available to all people in any country as it is not part of a school or college curriculum. There are definitely a few schools and colleges which offer music as an optional subject but this is not universal.

Second, parents and schools think that maths and science are needed to get a good job with a good salary as the number of jobs in these areas are more in number. Many think that arts as a subject are for the talented in areas like painting, sculpting, music, dance or drama. It is not considered important to have music or dance as part of your learning experience as you will never use it again.

Third, the importance of music as a therapy for people who are undergoing trauma or depression is not fully understood by a common man. The resonance of sound waves from music evokes different emotions and if fully understood it can heal people across the globe.

Fourth, learning musical instruments and other art forms is considered a costly affair and is meant for the people who can afford it in the current age. Good quality music education is not in reach of all children. This makes children not appreciate music.

However it is seen that people in all countries use music in many of the celebrations like marriage, birthdays or festivals like Christmas, Diwali. This shows that everyone enjoys music and can be musical. It is up to the teachers or Gurus of music to make it simpler and easy to understand for all people so that the appreciation of music increases for all types of music. And the policy makers for education in all countries to include music as a mandatory subject. This I feel will help children and adults alike appreciate all cultures and traditions and be receptive to other people’s likes and dislikes.
