On May 23 1984 Bachendri Pal became the first Indian woman to reach the summit of mount Everest. In 1990 she was listed on Guinness book of world record for her achievement. Later she led expedition in 1993;1994 and 1997 comprising only women.


She was born on 24 may 1954, Bachendri was one of the seven children in the Pal family. The flood of 1943 in the harsal valley made Bhejindre’s family homeless until her father started farming.

Despite Bhejindre’s family poor condition she still completed her M.A. in Sanskrit. At the age of 12 she started to trek her first height with 10 other friends. She trained at Nehru Institute Of Mountaineering (NIM), Uttarkashi. She was a part of India's first mix gender team which climbed the great mount Everest. T


The climb to Everest was not easy but a day before her birthday she became the first Indian woman to reach Everest summit
