There was once a young athlete who was frail but very determined. He had dedicated his entire life in sports. He had set his mind on winning the gold medal in the Olympic Games. The boy, by the name of Amit, had actually suffered a heart condition when he was born. Doctors had predicted that he would have a short lifespan but Amit had proved them wrong and had survived his first 20 years. Even though he was frail and could not perform intense physical activity he had prepared himself for the adversity which he was about to face and had not let the unkind looks and cruel comments which he had heard all his life ruin his self confidence and define him.

Amit had a supporting mother. She accepted her child’s condition and she was the driving force behind her son’s strength and tenacity. She put her heart and soul in encouraging Amit to be a sportsperson and to defy the odd stereotypes which people had set on all the people of the country who had special needs. She gave him valuable advice on the day of the competition. ”Beta , remember to do your best. Don’t worry about winning. Remember failure isn’t final. ”Saying so, she comforted her son and kissed him.

Amit walked through the streets with a feeling of nervousness and anxiety. He soon arrived at the field and stared at the colourful decorative balloons which represented his high spirit. Soon the time for the race came and Amit stood at the centre of the field along with his rivals at the side. The referee blew the whistle and said, ”3, 2, 1. Go!” All the athletes fuelled with their passion set off running at their fastest pace.

Suddenly in the middle of his tracks, Amit felt his legs ache so badly that he literally thought of stopping for a break. He fell his balance and grip wither away and suddenly in the middle of a dusty field on a clear, blue morning, he fell down. As if by the miracle of God, all his rivals stopped then and there and with a clear and unblemished intention lifted him from the ground and placed him for their shoulders and ran with all their might towards the finishing line. This surprising yet happy event took everyone for a surprise. The next day, the whole nation got to know about this wondrous event. ”First time in history-Fellow rivals help their competitor. What a show of courage and selflessness!”, remarked the reporter on television. The Times of India Newspapers had been boasting of the same thing. Everyone were amazed. This had been the first time in the history of the Olympic Games that someone had done something heroic. All the athletes of the race were awarded the greatest award in the history of the Olympic Games-“Award of True Sportsmanship. ”

This story reflects a selfless act done by the athletes towards their rival. This act was beyond the selfish ways of people who cheat on others to gain power and position. This story also reflects the love and dedication of a mother in raising her child. It also signifies the strength of people with special needs have.
