Social Distancing

Social Distancing

 Dear Diary:

Since the time total lockdown was announced by our Prime Minister in the wake of Corona Pandemic, Social Distancing has become Universal Mantra. It appeared to me that this word has several connotations and I have been trying to unravel its meaning other than the one given in the dictionary. Today on the 8th day, I have some consolidation of my thoughts based on the events that happened in the last 7 days. I have concluded that it could carry different meanings to different people.

The literal meaning of social distancing is well understood by all the law-abiding citizens of India who are wholeheartedly complying with it, by maintaining mandatory distance and obeying the orders of its government.     Alas, who can understand its figurative meaning better than the underprivileged people living in Dharavi who might have been yearning for social distancing all through their lives, but it always eluded them. It could have been differently interpreted by the migrant workers who were ready to walk unimaginable distances to distance themselves from the cities where they worked, as the trust on the locals had faltered. This word does not exist in the dictionaries of some of our countrymen, who in the name of religion, distanced themselves from the rest of their countrymen while being present so close, in the heart of the country’s capital.

In the internet parlance, it may be a search word or a keyword, but for the countrymen, it is a shield against COVID-19 and finally, for the Government of India it is the “Brahmastra” handed over by its Prime Minister to destroy the Corona Virus Demon. Surely the Goodwill win over the Evil and Peace will prevail
