Questions About Love

It was the time of summer vacations. By a small river in the village, under the shade of dense trees, two friends – Maya and Varun – would meet every evening and talk for hours. The cool breeze by the river and the gentle sound of flowing water gave them a sense of peace. Today too, they were sitting there, talking and laughing.

Maya, lost in thought, suddenly asked, “Varun… tell me honestly… what is love? People always say, ‘love someone’ or ‘don’t love,’ but I don’t really understand what real love is.”

Varun smiled gently and said, “Maya, love… is just a feeling. It’s the emotion that touches your heart suddenly. When you think about someone and you feel happy just knowing they are happy, that is love. Love is not just liking someone; it’s feeling for them. Their happiness becomes your happiness, and their pain becomes your pain.”

Maya tilted her head and asked, “So how does love happen? Does it happen suddenly, or slowly?”

Varun replied, “It can happen both ways. Sometimes, a person’s smile, the way they talk, or their habits… these touch your heart so quickly that you don’t even realize that you’ve fallen in love. And sometimes, over time, friendship and understanding grow, and love develops slowly. It depends on how much you share with the person, how much understanding you build, and how many feelings grow between you.”

Maya asked with curiosity, “But why does it happen? Why does someone’s heart go to another person?”

Varun took a deep breath and said, “Why… maybe it’s a law of nature. Humans sometimes feel lonely inside. We feel the need to connect with someone. We want to share happiness, pain, and every little thing with someone. Love is the name of that connection. When you feel that your world is incomplete without that person, and with them, you feel complete… that is love.”

Maya stayed silent for a while. Her face reflected both curiosity and a little confusion. Then she asked slowly, “And when love happens… how does it feel? What goes on in the heart?”

Varun smiled and said, “When love happens, the world seems a little different. You start seeing happiness in small things. You enjoy helping the person, listening to them, thinking about them. Love also comes with fear – fear that they might be unhappy, that they might not be okay without you. But that very fear, that care, that thoughtfulness is also love. Love is not just happiness; it has pain, understanding, and learning. Love makes a person better.”

Maya’s eyes sparkled as she asked, “So love isn’t just romance?”

Varun shook his head and said, “Absolutely not. Romance is only one part of love. Love is friendship, understanding, and companionship. In love, you learn how to understand someone’s feelings, how to sacrifice a little for their happiness. Love is not about ‘I,’ it’s about ‘we.’ And that is the most beautiful thing.”

Maya took a deep breath and said, “Now I understand a little. Love is not just liking someone, but feeling for them, caring for them, and being happy with them. And also… learning from them.”

Varun smiled and said, “Yes, Maya. And the most important thing… love cannot be forced. It comes on its own, grows on its own, and teaches on its own. Sometimes it comes quickly, sometimes slowly. But when it is right, you realize that this is the most precious thing in your life.”

The sun was slowly setting. Its red glow shimmered on the river’s surface. Both friends sat there, looking at their reflections in the water. Maya had a smile of understanding on her face, and Varun had a glow of satisfaction.

That evening, Maya realized for the first time that love is not just romance… love is friendship, understanding, companionship, and most importantly – learning. And Varun had not only answered his friend’s questions but had shown her the depth of love.

Slowly, both friends decided to walk home along the riverbank. The memories and conversations of that day stayed in their hearts forever.
