“It was a pleasure doing business with you. “smiled Caroline shaking the owner, Amelia’s hand firmly. “Well, I am glad you like the house,” said Amelia in an affable tone. Amelia opened the door and was about to leave when she warned Caroline surreptitiously, “Watch out for unexpected company at night, dear.” Before Caroline could question what she meant, Amelia was long gone.

Most of Caroline’s day went by in unloading and unpacking her stuff from trucks into the new house. Her arms became exhausted from lifting and moving around heavy, mahogany furniture. She experienced agony in her back from bending down continuously to unload boxes and she constantly shifted her tired legs. After putting everything in place, she chuckled with mirth at the thought of being the official owner of a two-floor house located near the coast. The sound of the rough billows and squawking seagulls could be heard.

After a tedious and long day, she tucked herself in bed and became engrossed in her book. She became drowsy and eventually dozed off. She woke up in the middle of the night, feeling parched and rose up to go to the kitchen to quench her thirst. Soft, scratching noises could be heard from the window, but Caroline ignored it feeling that it was a stray cat. As the scratching grew louder, she could not ignore it anymore and became certain that no stray cat could be possibly clawing at her window. Caroline froze and listened cautiously to the sounds. She bit her upper lip and the hair at the back of her neck stood up. The peculiar scratching noises stopped, but suddenly a loud squeak could be heard from the window. She sprinted to the locked window, to find it wide open! In terror, she picked up a pan and tip-toed room-to-room in search of her unexpected guest.

In one of the rooms, she gasped at the sight of an inhumanly, large muddy footprint. Out of the blue, she felt two cold hands grab her throat which tried to squeeze the life out of her. Now Amelia’s voice rang in her head “Watch out for the unexpected company at night, dear.” Caroline gasped for her life and tried to scream desperately for help. Finally, she banged the pan against her opponent’s head. What felt eerie was that she had managed to hit nothing and what was more peculiar was that no one was in the room.
