Measuring Worth
Measuring Worth
How do you measure your worth?
Is it the sum total of all the minute achievements that define you? Or is it a larger one that prevents you from hanging your head down? We live in a society that competes for success, that competes to make it on the top of the worthy list.
I've been a strong believer of relativity in everyday life. For example, for me, worth is having piles of certificates (nothing more than authoritative pieces of paper, really) from a good college, a good competition, a good internship that validates my work both ethically and as an individual. But for a poor individual (god bless him), worth is bringing Biryani two times a week when he could afford only once in a blue moon. He worked hard for it.
Competitive exams
We have to prove our worth, especially people like me who have screwed up their academics till now. Competitive exams are the single point of redemption and the preparation phase is our purgatory. More than our dreams we bank on the (omnipresent) Sharma ji ka ladka who is scoring more and just doesn't give a damn. Because he is intelligent, marks naturally come running to him.
Leaving aside the problem of procrastination and diversion aside, me and scores of nonSharmaji ka ladkas grind their brain grease (a not so distant relative of elbow grease) to get admission into good colleges. Battling the brutalities of tough questions that sweep tangentially over our heads. Other social factors play a huge role too but let's not delve into the details much.
Maturity
I have seen gangs in school, colleges pretending to be the boss, Full of muscle but lacking in brains. I have seen nerdy friends of mine cowering away from fights, hiding. They were the uncool ones.
Now, the tables have turned and how! I've realized being studious and tenacious (not necessarily meritorious) always pays off.
ALWAYS.
But maybe I realized it a little too late.
Takeaway
Nothing except to introspect, perhaps. To strive to improve ourselves every day. To polish the areas that we lack in. More importantly to seek help from those who are willing to.
