Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi is lovingly called "Bapu'. For many of us, he is the father of the Nation. He was born on 2nd October 1869 at Porbandar in Gujarat. His father was the Diwan of Rajkot. At the age of 12, he was married to Kasturba. He moved to England for higher studies. He returned as a barrister in 1891.

Bapu was totally opposed to the violation. Truth and ahimsa were his two, forceful weapons. He had faith in peace. While opposing British rule, he went to jail many times.

Gandhiji launched the Non-Co-operation Movement against the British. All the countrymen supported him wholeheartedly. Without any independence for India on 15th August 1947.

Gandhiji was shot dead on January 30, 1948, by Nathu Ram Godse. The father of the nation passed away, leaving all of us immensely sad. Nehru expressed his deep sorrow for his death. He said :

The light has gone out and there is darkness all around.
