This is a memory that I will cherish forever. A day when I was completely wild.
Being born to two law-abiding individuals with strict demeanor, there wasn't many rave moments in my life. In short, I lead a textbook life. Topper when I was young, extrovert, respectable to people, teacher's pet and the list goes on. I was not even allowed to talk to boys or go out with friends. So, my mundane life wanted a memory to cherish forever.
When I was in my 11th grade, my best friend X and I wanted to surprise my other best friend Y for his birthday. X and Y were in a relationship as well and X was my benchmate in class. X and I schemed a plan to cut cake for Y in advance. So, one fine morning, I told my parents that I was going to study with X and left the house to hers.
After actual studying of 2 hours, we readied ourselves to put our little plan into action. We got in an auto and went to a cake shop to buy a huge 1 kg cake for Y and then wrapped our gifts in hurry. We were losing time and X's parents might get snoopy in the meantime.. And so, we finished our business and rushed over to Y's house in the auto.
X went forward to his house and he opened the door for her. I hid beside the door and surprised him. The look of pure shock and horror danced across my best friend's face which was a comical treat. He hastily left us inside his house and ran to the terrace. In his hurry, he didn't even notice the cake which I carried in my hand.
After a few minutes of screaming into the air, he returned. It was fun and joys. We cut cake, shared gifts and teased and chatted for more than an hour. Things were going fun till we heard the distinct noise of the doorbell. What did we do? X jumped into the cupboard and sat atop the clothes of Y's mother. Me, the never-crazy one, also joined her in a matter of seconds.
We held hands in trepidation waiting for someone to open the cupboard. I could hear the faint murmurs of conversation in the living room. His mother had come home early that day. Ah. Joy. Just our luck. X was on the verge of tears with brimming eyes. My sanity level drooped so low that I started chuckling inside the cupboard.
My laugh was apparently contagious since X joined in too. We looked like 2 lunatics on nitrous oxide, laughing at possible doom. After another 5 minutes of internal screaming and external chuckling, Y came to open the cupboard to let us out. Never had 2 girls run faster than we did, on that day. We grabbed our books, bags and slippers and ran past the house, avoiding his mom. Once, we were out, the laughing again resurfaced. We were two crazed lunatics in the middle of the road, wheezing for the next few minutes.
We escaped getting caught that day. I don't know what would have happened if his mom found us. But I knew one thing. Breaking a few rules and laughing with friends definitely trumps any mundane task. It was worth it and I would repeat the same in a heartbeat.
