Born in Nepal, but having done prolific work in India, Anuradha Koirala, endearingly known as Dijju, has helped rescue over 12,000 girls in her 20-year journey in the field of social work. Koirala was first was absorbed by the thought of serving others when she saw the impact the Mother and Sisters of her convent school back in Kalimpong had.

Inspired by the work of Mother Teresa, after working as a teacher for over two decades, in 1993 she set up Maiti Nepal. The organisation works towards rescuing and rehabilitating girls from brothels, providing a safe space for them.

Over the years, Maiti Nepal has grown from a small space to being spread across three prevention homes, eleven transit homes, two hospices, and one school across Nepal. It now conducts awareness sessions, community sensitisation programmes, women empowerment programmes, provides legal support to the needy, and therapy for children and women affected by HIV, apart from conducting rescue operations.

Several of the girls Koirala has rescued over the years, work as border guards at the India-Nepal border to help identify victims and rescue them. The number of girls trafficked on the border is high, and these rescuers save four girls every day on an average.

Koirala has been recognised and awarded with many honours and works round the clock to create awareness about the urgent cause.

Hats off!
