Rumours: A Physics of Falsehood
Rumours: A Physics of Falsehood
Rumours: A Physics of Falsehood
An Unpublished Law of Human Nature
Rumors travel faster than light
We instigate and inspire people to fight
Einstein pursued the laws by which light could race,
While Newton sought the forces time and space;
Yet rumour’s physics baffled every sage—
More strange than light, more subtle than the age.
No grand equation could its course define,
Nor unify its falsehood with a sign;
For light obeys the laws that nature writes,
But rumour bends them all to serve our appetites.
Our credibility is very very low
Though people bend and bow
As we travel farther facts get diluted
People change hands and fact is polluted
Rumors pick up the matter of mass interest
Falsehood spreaders see their own interest
Mass interest is never served
People get what they deserved
Rumors are never verifiable
Educate yourself to learn and makeable
Rumors travel faster than light
Unless you verify facts keep lips tight
We need no rocket, engine, fuel, or flame,
No distance slows the spreading of our name;
Through crowded streets and cyberspace we fly,
And cross the globe before you ask us why.
No photon bears the burden of our mass,
Yet we outrun each signal as we pass;
We borrow speed from ignorance and fear,
And gain fresh wings with every listening ear.
We have no weight, yet weigh upon the mind,
And leave the heaviest consequences behind;
A whisper weighs no more than falling snow,
Yet topples reputations with its blow.
No telescope can trace our point of birth,
No scale can weigh the damage done on Earth;
We multiply without a measured seed,
And grow wherever prejudice takes heed.
We travel through the vacuum of the net,
Where facts are scarce and minds are easier to get;
No medium seems too thin, no barrier too strong,
For falsehood finds a crowd to carry it along.
We bend no light, yet twist the public view,
And paint the false as old, familiar, true;
The lens of reason clouds before our show,
And shadows grow where evidence should glow.
Black holes devour light within their sphere,
Yet rumours seem to travel everywhere;
No event horizon holds our flight—
We thrive beyond the reach of proof and sight.
We break no law of gravity by weight,
Yet pull whole crowds towards a common hate;
The greater fear, the stronger our attraction,
The heavier the fall of mass reaction.
In quantum realms, a state may be unknown,
But we declare the answer as our own;
We collapse all doubt before the facts appear,
And call conviction proof when none is near.
We need no particle to prove our claim,
No measured charge, no laboratory name;
Our evidence is often what we lack,
Yet every echo sends the rumour back.
We violate the law that energy must stay,
For every retelling adds another ray;
The tale grows larger, though its source grows small,
And gains new villains, victims, causes—all.
We cross all borders, languages, and creeds,
And change our shape to suit the hearers’ needs;
No passport stamped, no customs line to stand,
We flourish wherever certainty is planned.
We travel through the chambers of the mind,
Where hope and fear leave sober thought behind;
A fact must labour, gather proof, and wait,
While we arrive and dictate truth and fate.
The scholar asks for evidence and source,
The rumour answers with a louder force;
The careful mind investigates the claim,
The careless mind repeats it all the same.
We need no peer review, no test, no trial,
We borrow truth’s own dress and wear its style;
A fabricated chart, a quotation torn,
And trust is captured ere the facts are born.
Our half-life grows when doubt begins to rise,
For contradiction gives us fresh supplies;
The more we’re challenged, the more some will defend
The tale they shared, unwilling to amend.
We thrive where power fears the searching light,
Where silence serves the strong and facts invite a fight;
The ruler’s whisper may become decree,
And manufactured doubt may pass for free.
Yet there is one force that can slow our race:
A patient mind that asks us for our base;
Check source and context, test what you are told,
For not all widely shared reports are gold.
Let evidence be measured, not applause,
Let doubt examine claims before they cause;
The truth may walk where rumours seem to fly,
Yet truth can stand when fabricated stories die.
Rumors travel faster than light,
We instigate and inspire people to fight;
But pause, verify, before you share or write—
The speed of falsehood is no proof of right.
